Last week in Vegas, I had the pleasure of interviewing NBA Clippers basketball player, Al-Farouq Aminu. Al-Farouq has a cool, fun sense of style and has teamed up with Geek Eyewear. Geek was started by Alena Lehrer. Alena began rummaging through flee markets and finding vintage eyewear frames wherever possible. She brought the idea of “geeky” glasses to LBI (glasses manufacturer) and proved to them that there’s a niche for this trend of eyewear. The campaign for the line turned into “geeks come in all sizes and colors”. The idea of 40 different types of “geeky” frames that can fit all types of faces was genius to me. I love the look and feel of this collection. Al-Farouq is so “brand right” and I’m excited to share a little of his side of the story with you. Let me know what you think of the line!
Al-Farouq Aminu- NBA Basketball Player
How do you describe your personal style?
“I don’t like to follow a trend, I like to do stuff on my own. I don’t like to wear what everybody else is wearing, I try to do something a little different.”
What’s the first thing you look for in your closet when getting ready? Do you have a favorite thing to wear?
“I really have a fascination for button-up, short sleeve shirts. I don’t know why but I love them. I just recently started getting different types of pants not just normal jeans. I like cargo pants, those are probably my favorite right now.”
Do you have a style icon?
“Not really. I might take bits and pieces. I might see someone wearing a nice shirt or somebody who has good shoes but I don’t really like to take somebody’s whole entire outfit. I don’t want to copy anybody.”
Now that you’ve been part of the NBA for over a year, do you feel pressure to fit a status as far as clothing/style? Did you change the way you dressed?
“Sometimes. Not like crazy, but sometimes it’s just natural to buy things. Like everyone just has a Gucci belt or everyone has a Louis bag. So if you come on a plane with a cheap belt, people are like looking, it just becomes a custom. People aren’t going to say “you need to get a better belt” but it’s implied. Somebody might talk about your belt. So yeah, you don’t have to necessarily get a fancy belt, but you’re held to a higher standard.”
Has eyewear always been something you wore?
“I really started wearing glasses when I started going to college, about 2-3 years ago. I used to always wear big frames. I never wore glasses so I thought it was cool to wear glasses from time to time.”
What’s your favorite shape/style of glasses from Geek?
“Yeah, these are the ones that are for me, they’re called the Rouq3. I like them a lot. I like the shape a lot and one day want to get them in gold or a different color so I they stand out a little bit. You gotta start out with something solid first though and I like how it’s all one color. I like them all a little bigger, so people don’t just think they’re normal glasses.”
What intrigued you to work with and wear Geek eyewear?
“After I wore a lot of their glasses, they contacted my agent and they wanted to do something together. I looked up LBI and thought it was a great opportunity.”
What’s your favorite part of working with Geek?
“Free glasses!! Haha. They say one day I’ll be able to go to China and help out. They said I can design my case and cloth that goes with them. It’s been quick, only a year, so it’s been hard to get into the design of them but one day I will be able to.”
Are the glasses you wear prescription or just for style?
“No, it’s just for the look.”
Outside of basketball, what are some of your favorite things to do?
“I like to draw. I really like video games, big time! I like all types, like Madden and Black Hawk. I’ve started gardening too. I’m growing peppers, tomatoes, cilantro and spices.”
What’s next for you and Geek eyewear?
“I’d like to become more hands-on with it.”
