The summer sneaker

TWR The summer sneaker winter 2017

Walk this way. As sunny-warm(er) days continue to be forecasted for DC, it gets me excited for a shift in footwear options. During the spring/summer months, you’ll typically find me wearing a minimal ballet flat or pair of strappy sandals. I love being barefoot or the nearly-there feeling. I’ve noticed an assortment of summer sneakers coming out in stores and online for spring. I don’t wear sneakers unless I’m going to the gym, period. With that being said, I secretly love athleisure styling that includes a pair of sneakers. It’s my catch 22/love-hate relationship with sneakers. White is the way to go if you’re going to be wearing this summer sneaker trend. I pulled a few of my favorite maybe I’d consider trying these on styles. Go for a look that has perforated leather, unexpected details and most importantly, a bright-white fabric. Stay tuned as I may try on the trend which has slim-to-none chance of me actually wearing them.

Topshop Unique

TWR Topshop Unique Fall 2017 6

The casual Brit. Topshop Unique‘s Fall 2017 collection honed in on elements of proper woman unveiling her playful side. Silhouettes were primarily free-flowing and less-than-refined. Sweatshirts billowed over shoulders while skirts draped down the legs lightly. I love the relaxed feel to the well-styled looks. Layers played a big role in this collection—as they defined the element of surprise with the mixture of prints and textures.  Take inspiration from this collection to fully embrace your personal style and let the clothing do the talking.

Derek Lam

Yes, please. Derek Lam‘s Fall 2017 is everything I’d love to wear. Lam stemmed his collection off the idea of being a one-stop-shop. His pieces are perfect for work to after hours. The embellishments were oozing with simplistic drama. They made a statement without overwhelming the look with decor. I love the attention to detail Lam used on each piece, even lining fabrics in contrasting colors to bring added depth to the looks. A-line silhouettes played a strong roll in this collection, showing a woman’s shape without being overly clingy. Sign me up for this head-to-toe first look, please! Fashion week has wrapped up in NYC and is headed to London—more to come next week.

John Elliott

Raise the lights. John Elliott‘s Fall 2017 menswear collection recently took to the runway. Elliott is looking to take a shift in his branding to become a more mainstream sportswear brand. This collection really told the story he was conveying, through track jackets, knitwear fabrications and an effortless infusion of track pants in the lifestyle pieces. I really love the way they styled multiple layers of jackets together. This layering gave me a flashback to my brother playing in basketball tournaments as a kid. He’d layer up his look with an under-tank, jersey and jacket. Each part of his journey, from traveling to warm-up and game time, would involve a different layer of his uniform. Elliott used an infusion of color, possibly playing off of a team-spirit vibe, with vibrant shades of citrus hues, rich emerald green, navy blue and a rich merlot palette. I’m excited to see what translates from runway to ready-to-wear for his pieces.

3.1 Phillip Lim

Happy Valentine’s Day! On a day catered to sharing your love for each other, I wanted to share a date-night collection worthy of a double take at NYFW. 3.1 Phillip Lim‘s Fall 2017 collection is casually-bold and vibrant. I love the infusion a pink and blues throughout the primarily black and white collection. The silhouettes are taking a shift away from the ultra-constricted look to a more relaxed, billowing-over-the-shoulder look. Leather, lace and peek-a-boo slits brought an playful touch to the soft silhouettes. Trousers were a key element to this collection with their tapered ankles and baggy waistlines. Let this well curated look inspired your Valentine’s Day style—sexy with a little bit of ease.

2017 Grammy Awards

Hello, from the other side. Last night the 59th Grammy awards took over the Staples Center in Los Angeles just a few miles away from our wedding venue. When first looking through the red carpet arrivals I was nervous for what I was seeing—way too much skin, way too little focus on figure flattering silhouettes and so on. Thank you to the stylists who came through with well curated looks for their clients. I pulled a few hot trends to keep an eye out for this spring:

Plunging Details
Peeping Out
Metallic Notions
Sheer Vibes

The looks that stole the night in my opinion all had one thing in common, their looks were bold from head-to-toe and the women wearing the looks commanded a double take. If you’re going to go for a statement trend, make sure not to over-style the look, letting the fabric, color or detail do the talking.

Who was on your best dress listed at the Grammys?

Plunging Details
Céline Dion in Zuhair Murad
Jennifer Lopez in Ralph & Russo

Peeping Out
Carrie Underwood in Elie Madi

Demi Lovato in Julien Macdonald

Faith Hill in Zuhair Murad

Metallic Notions
Solange Knowles

Katy Parry in Tom Ford

Heidi Klum in Philipp Plein

Sheer Vibes
Chrissy Teigen in Roberto Cavalli

Kelsea Ballerini in Ines Di Santo
